How the free-article meter works
Alligen allows ten unique curated news-link opens per calendar month before asking a visitor to subscribe.
Identifiers used
The meter uses a random browser identifier stored in a secure cookie and the visitor’s network address as an anti-abuse signal. The server converts both into one-way hashes before storing monthly counters. Alligen does not intentionally store the raw network address in the metering database.
Shared networks
A higher network-level safety threshold is used so that people sharing a workplace, laboratory, library or household connection are less likely to block one another.
Subscriptions and forms
Email addresses and job or project submissions are processed through Netlify Forms. The access service stores only a one-way hash of the subscriber email; the email itself remains in the form submission system so Alligen can manage the mailing list.
External publishers
Alligen links to third-party publishers. Their privacy, registration and subscription rules apply after you leave Alligen.
